Bridges to Connection: Developing Resilience and Spiritual Practices

with Darla Samuelson

A method for developing an understanding and sense of connection to God is practicing spiritual disciplines. By expanding spiritual disciplines into contemplative practices, awareness focuses on oneself in the midst of God and others. Emotions are often encountered as barriers to contemplative practices and to being present to oneself and to others, yet once identified and regulated, they can become bridges to greater empathetic connection. This course teaches that resilience enhances the ability to regulate emotions like shame by expanding our contemplative spiritual practices. As a result of this course students will

  1. explore the idea of emotions in the readings and journaling,

  2. experiment with various contemplative spiritual practices that can help work with and through emotions,

  3. begin to articulate awareness of emotions as barriers and bridges to being present to oneself.

Guest Author Series

Worthy: Finding Yourself in A World Expecting Someone Else with Melanie Mock

Join Melanie Springer Mock and Kathi Gatlin as we host a conversation through Melanie Mock’s book Worthy: Finding Yourself in a World Expecting Someone Else.

Who do you think you are? And is it enough? It’s not just the world of billboards, commercials, and social media that makes it difficult to figure out who God has created you to be. At times it’s Christian culture, with its clear-cut expectations about godly men and women and ideals of service and vocation. In Worthy, college professor Melanie Springer Mock sifts through the shape and weight of expectations that press Christians into cultural molds rather than God’s image. By plumbing Scripture and critiquing the $10 billion a year self-improvement industry, Mock offers life-giving reminders that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Set free from the anxiety to conform to others’ expectations, we are liberated to become who God has created us to be.

If you’re worn out from worrying that you’ve missed God’s One Big Calling, and if you’re tired of trying to fit yourself into some cookie-cutter Christian mold, step away from the expectations and toward God’s heart.

Going Deeper Through Paradox

with Katie Skurja

What if there was a way to peel back the broken and tattered pieces of ourselves, and uncover a new life of freedom, adventure, and transformation? For many of us, our misconceptions about the nature and character of the triune God have kept us from the freedom and joy found in our true identity in Christ. Using stories of transformation, this course presents a framework for understanding our patterns of “stuckness” and provides specific tools for getting off the riverbanks and into the current. With life-giving insight into God’s nature, students will find the courage to uncover their own wounded places, as well as invite others to experience the wholeness of abundant life in Christ.
